Questions we get asked

Frequently asked questions

The things people ring up and ask before they book. If your question is not here, call the workshop on 0431 814 727 and we will answer it straight.

Booking and drop-off

How do I book my car in?

Easiest is through our online booking platform at book.repairy.au/ams, or call us directly on 0431 814 727.

Can I just drop in, or do I need an appointment?

A booking is essential. That said, if something critical has come up out of the blue, we're happy to have a brief look between jobs and tell you whether it needs to be left with us or can hold off until we can book you in.

Can I drop the car off outside your opening hours?

Drop-off, yes — there is a key box, so you can leave the car with us outside our operating times.

For pickup outside hours, give us a call and we will work something out.

Do you do same-day servicing?

Yes. All our service bookings are done on a same-day basis, unless more work is needed — and we'll call you before any of that goes ahead.

An express service is also available if you'd rather wait for the car. Give us a call for more information.

Can I wait at the workshop while the car is serviced?

Yes. We have a fully equipped office with a workstation, coffee, water, Wi-Fi and a TV.

Do you have a courtesy car or loan car?

Courtesy cars are available. An additional cost may apply.

Are you open on weekends or public holidays?

No. We're open Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, and closed on weekends and public holidays.

Can someone else drop the car off or pick it up for me?

Yes, anyone can drop off or collect on your behalf. For collection we just need confirmation from you of who is picking the vehicle up.

Servicing and logbooks

Will servicing here void my new-car warranty?

No. You are entitled to have your car serviced by an independent workshop without losing your manufacturer's warranty, as long as the service is carried out to the manufacturer's schedule with parts and fluids that meet their specification. That is exactly how we service.

Do you stamp logbooks?

Yes. We service to the manufacturer's schedule and stamp your logbook, so your new-car warranty stays intact.

How often should I service my car?

It varies from car to car. For most, it lands somewhere between 6 and 12 months.

What is the difference between the Essential, Essential Plus and Essential Plus Euro services?

Essential is for standard older vehicles, generally pre-2000.

Essential Plus is for most post-2000 vehicles, which need fully synthetic oil.

Essential Plus Euro is for European vehicles, especially ones still within warranty.

Full inclusions for each are on the pricing page.

Do you service European cars?

Yes. European work is a big part of what we do, and the Essential Plus Euro service is built around it — including the electronic logbook reset and an ECU diagnostic scan.

Do you service 4WDs, utes and vans?

Yes, we service them all.

I have missed a few services. Is that a problem?

Not ideal, but it's fixable. Let us know when you book and we'll bring the car back up to scratch.

Do you follow the manufacturer schedule or your own?

We follow manufacturer schedules where we can. In some cases we'll advise a better routine for how the car is actually being driven.

What oil do you use?

We carry a range. Our main partners are Martini Racing, Penrite and Motul.

Pricing and payment

Will I know the cost before you start any work?

Yes. We always quote and confirm with you before we start.

What happens if you find something extra while my car is in?

We'll let you know and give you the option to have it done, if we have the capacity that same day. No extra work is performed without your consent.

Do you charge a diagnostic fee, and is it credited if I go ahead with the repair?

Diagnostic time is charged. In most cases it's credited against the repair, but it is case by case depending on the job.

For example: if we spend two hours tracing a fault and it turns out to be a bad wiring connection that takes five minutes to fix, we can't charge you five minutes of labour and waive the two hours of diagnostic work.

What payment methods do you accept?

All major bank cards accepted.

Do you take a deposit?

For major jobs that need specific parts ordered in, yes.

Do you offer payment plans, Afterpay or Zip?

Unfortunately not.

Repairs and parts

Do you use genuine parts or aftermarket?

A mix of both, depending on what you need and whether the car is still under new-car warranty. We'll tell you which we're fitting and what the difference is.

Can I supply my own parts?

Yes, though we charge a different labour rate for customer-supplied parts.

Can I see the old parts you replaced?

Certainly can — just ask when you book the work in.

Can you do a pre-purchase inspection before I buy a car?

Yes. Give us a call before you commit to a car and we will book it in.

Warranty

Do you warranty your workmanship?

Yes. We warranty all our work.

How long is the warranty on parts you supply?

It changes depending on the supplier. Most brands run somewhere between one and two years.

Roadworthy certificates

Do you do roadworthy certificates?

Not in-house, but we can still sort one out for you through a licensed tester. Mention it when you book.

About AMS

What areas do you cover?

We're on Newcastle Road in Bayswater, and most of our customers come from around the eastern suburbs — Boronia, Wantirna, Ferntree Gully, Heathmont, Knoxfield, Croydon and Ringwood. Plenty travel further than that to see us.

What makes you different from a dealership?

We're a fully equipped independent workshop, not a franchise and not a dealership service desk. You talk to the people actually working on your car, you get a quote before anything starts, and nothing extra happens without your say-so.

Still not sure?

Ring the workshop and talk it through. No obligation, and you will get a straight answer on whether it is worth booking in.
